Vermont Jazz Ensemble Audio CD Profits Will Fund Scholarships

The Vermont Jazz Ensemble celebrated its silver anniversary with the release of a new CD entitled 25 Years in the Moonlight on the Sonic Mirage label. This recording features a swinging mix of classic tunes from the Big Band era and contemporary jazz arrangements performed by Vermont’s premier big band. Comprised of seventeen musicians from around the state, the Vermont Jazz Ensemble has been dedicated to bringing Vermont and New England the finest in big band sounds since 1976.

Members of the band share a passion for playing jazz as well as a devotion to music education and seeing that the jazz tradition is carried forward in younger players. In keeping with these values, the Vermont Jazz Ensemble will donate all profits from the sale of this CD to fund scholarships for the annual Vermont All State Music Festival.

The All State Music Festival celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in May 2002, labeled the Diamond Project. The Vermont Jazz Ensemble is especially proud to continue support for the important work that All State offers young musicians.

The new CD will be available for purchase at upcoming performances and at music retailers and bookstores throughout the region. Orders can also be sent by .

The VJE Goes to the Studio.

The VJE began recording music for our first CD. The project is intended as a memento and celebration of our 25 year anniversary coming up in April 2001 and this will be the first recording since "All of Us" released in 1986. The CD will feature some great big band music spanning a wide array of styles including "Miles Adventure", composed and arranged by our own trumpeter Dave Ellis. Another feature of the CD will be the piece "Eva's Prize" which was composed and arranged for the VJE by the great Sammy Nestico.

Most of the music for this CD was recorded "live" at the Dibden Center for the Performing Arts at Johnson State College between November 17 and 20. These sessions were masterfully engineered by Chuck Eller along with his excellent assistants Rob and Laine. As always, Rich Davidian did a superb job leading the 17 member ensemble to perform at its best throughout the 4 days.

Keep your eye out in local record stores in the coming months (probably around February, 2001) for the CD. You can also check back here, as we will likely have a way to order via the Internet. We also hope to have a CD release party and 25th anniversary celebration in March or April so keep an eye out for that too.
